El Peñol 2022. “Wherever you look, you have to go up”
The sign said it was the toughest 70.3 in Latin America. For many, it was at least one of the most demanding races of their lives. The Peñol was a difficult goal to conquer, an event that pushed the legs and the heart to the limit.
The song by Alcolirykoz perfectly describes this appointment that triathletes have year after year with Sportravel: “wherever you look you have to climb”. Out of the water everything was uneven, the athletes faced the ups and downs of the road between El Peñol and Guatapé as rarely happens in this sport. A route that required mastery of handling the bike's gears, saving legs on the climbs and having courage on the descents to gain seconds on the clock. Here there was no time to get your head stuck in your thoughts and add kilometers by pedaling, it was a different Sunday, a medal that was won by hand.
Athletics, on the other hand, was the same story, or perhaps a more dramatic one. Many of us couldn't believe the steep slopes that took our breath away and seemed like sprints with each lap we took. The race required legs, courage and persistence to overcome stretches that assaulted our heads with bad thoughts and desires to walk or throw in the towel. 12 or 21 kilometers of hills, going up or down, but hills.
And the finish line, as the cherry on the cake, was a wall that was overcome by the will, the heart and the drive of the hundreds of people who accompanied this sunny morning of pure triathlon. Those last meters portrayed what this sport is, a constant lesson in life, an encounter with the surprises that the path brings and a constant lesson about the inevitable climb to reach the beautiful moment of opening your arms to then close them in the hugs that await behind the mat.
